Rwanda: Onwards and Upwards!

There’s lots of news to report from Ahazaza Independent School this month! As the first term begins to draw to a close, the projects are in full flow and students are sitting their end term exams as we speak. They’ve all been revising hard so fingers crossed everyone will be happy with their results.

Uganda: Case Study: Marion Ssewajje.

Name: Marion Ssewajje  Age: 17  Class: S2 Boarding student

Uganda: Business number five.

After almost two years and a lot of teething problems, the St Denis Posho Mill finally opened its doors to customers on 1st March 2012. Although the building and machinery has been in place for over a year, the mill was only connected to the electricity supply in February this year, to the great relief of the community who have been waiting and fundraising for its operation throughout 2011.

Uganda: A New Head Teacher.

After a long and anxious wait for the students and staff of St Denis, a new headteacher was finally appointed and arrived on 28th Feb. Namulema Lucia has come from being deputy head in an urban school in Masaka in order to see St Denis through the next stage of its development. She was selected for her diplomatic nature and commitment to the continuation of the self-sufficiency project and will be closely supported by the Parish, our field officer, and a new projects manager to ensure that the school businesses continue to thrive and develop.

Kenya-Drama at Ondati!

It has been all hands on deck for the volunteers at Ondati Secondary in Kenya recently.

Kenya: Anna Achieng - Learning valuable lessons!

We already know that the Teach A Man To Fish model can provide a sustainable income to schools, but they are also a very powerful educational tool for students. They offer an excellent platform for learning entrepreneurial skills and business acumen. Anna Achieng is an example of someone who has learned from the practical experience and has related it to her own home life.

Uganda: Teach A Man To Fish workshop in Kampala

Teach A Man To Fish Uganda offer workshops to school directors, head teachers and teachers in Uganda who are interested in the Teach A Man To Fish model of sustainable education and want to learn about the benefits it can bring to their schools. We held an introduction workshop at Lweza training center on 10th February which looked at "Overcoming the challenges and creating solutions for sustainable education in Uganda".  We were joined by some furry friends!

Rwanda: Moving Forward

2012 started well for Ahazaza Independent School, Primary 6 national exams results came out and guess what? Ahazaza ranked 14 out of 2400 schools in Rwanda! Academically our pupils are performing and achieving the high goals the school sets for them, all thanks to the dedication of our teachers and our partners. The school will keep aiming high and perhaps one day you will see Ahazaza at the top, who knows!

Kenya: New Year, New Approach at Ondati

It’s a new approach for a new year at Ondati Secondary in Kenya, as the school looks to push on and improve the businesses on site. In order to arouse greater enthusiasm for the businesses from the students, the school decided to simply let the girls choose which different ‘business club’ they would like to join. With the newly formed ‘Beauty Salon Business Club’, the ‘Volunteer Friendship Club’ and a good harvest of nearly ripe pineapples, means we are witnessing much more enthusiasm toward our enterprises this year.

Nicaragua: Meet Nelson Lanuza, an inspiring graduate from La Bastilla!

This week I’d like to introduce you to Nelson Lanuza, one of our December graduates who is now working at La Bastilla Coffee Estates. He is a great example of how much education can transform people’s lives, if they take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to them.
