Income Generating Initiatives - some examples

So what is an income generating initiative that has educational value?

Here are four clear examples from around the world of how you can teach useful skills and generate income to support your school or education program.

Floriculture Fish Farming

Nepal Polytechnic, Nepal
The market for quality produced flowers across Nepal and Asia is blossoming. Despite this there is very few floriculture training opportunities for young people in Nepal, especially for those from poor backgrounds who cannot afford to pay standard course fees.

Nepal Polytechnic Floriculture TrainingIn its first year the Nepal Polytechnic project trained 34 rural youth in the art of running a successful floriculture business. Students on the course learn about flower production & arrangement, nursery management, garden design, insect & pest management, marketing, and business skills. This is then reinforced with ‘on the job’ training in the local area.

With an initial investment of $5,000, the project made $2,900 from flower enterprises during Year 1 - enough funding to continue at full capacity the next year, and to keep on generating income indefinitely!

Songhai Centre, Benin
The Songhai Centre is a local NGO which runs six agricultural schools across Benin. The schools train students with specialist skills in fish-farming activities which provide a significant amount of income to support the Songhai Centre’s activities.

Fish farming at a school in BeninIn recent years students have led a maggot production program, where products from the school’s abattoir are used to cultivate over 500kg of maggots per day, which can then provide 75% of the feed required for the fish stock.

Because fish feed accounts for over 60% of production costs, the fish farm is becoming much more profitable.

The extra revenue helps to support and expand the schools activities, whilst students are educated in efficient fish farming methods.

School Store Mango Tree Nursery

San Francisco Agricultural School, Paraguay
The San Francisco Agricultural High School in Cerrito, Paraguay has set up the Parador Cerrito, a roadside convenience store and cafe, where it sells fresh, organic produce and dairy products that students have produced on the school’s farm campus.

School Store in ParaguayFrom steaks to cakes, the Parador serves up tasty dishes made from ingredients produced at the school, thereby “adding value” to the school’s farm production and helping the school towards its goal of financial self-sufficiency.

Currently, the Parador takes in 14% of the school’s revenue, and aims to cover 30% of the school’s total operating costs in future years.

Lwak Girls High School, Kenya
A nursery has been established by students at the school, which aims at extending the mango production season.

This is being achieved by teaching students how to graft and grow both earlier and later ripening mango tree varieties to sell locally.

Mangoes ready for marketThe income from the sale of young mango trees has been used to support school activities and students are advancing and diversifying their skill base at the same time.

The project also provides useful information to the local community on mango farming.
