1. Entry Criteria
- The competition is open to all organizations with a focus on education located in one of the 54 African countries for which awards are available (see below).
- Entries can be submitted on behalf on another organization – e.g. by non-African NGOs on behalf of their local partner / office – however prize monies and conference travel bursaries must be claimed by, and used for the benefit of, the Africa-based organization itself.
- The full list of African countries for which prizes are available is as follows:
Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo (Democratic Republic of the), Congo-Brazzaville (also known as Republic of the Congo), Côte d'Ivoire (commonly known as Ivory Coast), Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
- All entries must be accompanied by work contact details of a suitable referee who is able to confirm that the contents of the entry are a true and accurate representation of the entrant’s work
- Referees must be i) independent of your organisation and ii) either a government official, qualified professional, or senior employee of an internationally recognized institution.
- Qualified professionals for the purpose of this competition include: teachers (employed by a different institution), doctors, lawyers, judges, accountants, bankers, engineers, and police officers.
- Referees cannot include family members of the entrant.
If you have any doubts about whether your referee meets these criteria please contact competition@teachamantofish.org.uk prior to submitting an entry.
2. Conduct of the Competition
- The Educating Africa Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education 2009 is a one round competition running for three months from the Thursday 1st October till Thursday 31st December.
- Entries can be submitted through the website using the online competition entry form, or by email or post using the downloadable form provided on the TeachAManToFish website. Entries may be a maximum of 2-sides of A4 paper or 1,000 words long. Entries may be submitted in English or French. Competition entries received in other languages can not be accepted.
- To be considered, all entries must be received by TeachAManToFish on, or before, the competition close date. TeachAManToFish cannot be held responsible for any failure in postal or electronic transmission of which might cause entries to be delivered after the closing date, or not at all.
- Entrants are not required to join as members of the TeachAManToFish network in order to enter the competition.
- Membership of the TeachAManToFish network and entry to the competition are completely free of charge.
- TeachAManToFish reserves the right to amend the terms & conditions of the competition subsequent to the start date or to cancel it in its entirety. This prerogative will however only be used under exceptional circumstances and where no practicable alternative is available.
- The selection criteria of winner will be made available through the website.
3. Use of Information
- All entrants agree to be added automatically to the TeachAManToFish contact list which entitles them to receive quarterly email newsletters and will be offered a chance to join as members of the TeachAManToFish network. Note: Entrants can be removed from this contact list at any point by sending a blank email to unsubscribe@teachamantofish.org.uk with the word ‘unsubscribe’ in the subject line.
- By submitting an entry into the competition entrants are agreeing to allow TeachAManToFish and Educating Africa to use their stories as part of their online and offline communications in such as a manner as they sees fit.
- TeachAManToFish and Educating Africa will not share contact and personal details of entrants on a commercial basis with any 3rd parties. Where it is considered by us to the entrants advantage to share such details with members of the TeachAManToFish network we reserve the right to do so.
4. Winners
- A prize of USD $1,000 is available to the best entrant from every country in Africa (listed in Section 1) as decided by the competition jury.
- In place of this prize an award of USD $10,000 is available to the best entry overall as well as two awards of $5,000 for the best runners-up.
- The top three award winners will be sponsored a trip to South Africa for the awards presentation and peer learning visits to key Educating Africa and Teach A Man to Fish partners.
- The use of prize money is at the discretion of the recipient organization. To receive the prize the winning organizations will require a bank account in the name of that organization.
- The full list of award winners will be announced in February 2010, however the top three prize winners will be contacted beforehand to facilitate travel arrangements for the trip to South Africa.
- Disbursement of funds is to be contingent on the submission of relevant proofs required and verification of these documents along with the achievements described in winning entries.
- Winning entrants will be required to submit a copy of a valid identification document as proof that they are the individual to which the winning entry relates. Acceptable documents include passports, national identity cards, and driving licenses although where these are not available other forms of proof may be considered.
- Disbursal of country awards is not expected before March 2010.
- By entering this competition you are consenting to allow representatives from TeachAManToFish to verify in person, where so deemed necessary, the truthfulness of any entry submitted, and to allow stories and images to be gathered for communications purposes. This might ordinarily take the form of visits to the organizations field operations /headquarters and to those of their referee.
5. Jury and Selection Procedure
- TeachAManToFish retains full responsibility for the composition of the jury.
- The jury reserves the right to make no award for a given country where there is no entry that is judged to be of sufficient quality from that country.
- The jury is fully and solely responsible for the final selection of the winning entries. There will be no correspondence about the jury’s final decision.
- Although the competition is open to all organizations based in Africa working in education, preference will be given in the judging stages to organizations which are legally registered in the relevant country, which have been in existence for more than two years, and which are able and willing to provide.
- TeachAManToFish and the jury at all times have the right to disqualify a participant, without the obligation to state the reasons.
6. Liability and Conflicts
- TeachAManToFish will not be liable for any claims regarding the procedure or selection of the winning entries.
- All conflicts will be made available for judgement to the TeachAManToFish Board of Trustees.
