EDUCATING AFRICA Pan African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education 2009

ENTRY TO THE EDUCATING AFRICA PAN AFRICAN AWARDS FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN EDUCATION 2009 IS NOW CLOSED

“For Africa to be able to be able to rise to the challenges of tomorrow, more and better education will be a key requirement”

To achieve this goal it will not be enough to offer more of the same kind of education in the same kind of school systems. It will require young people to learn how to solve the challenges ahead, in classes which are relevant to their lives today. It will require new and entrepreneurial models which can be replicated and taken to scale.

Now in its third year, the EDUCATING AFRICA Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education continue to seek to identify the very best organizations which have risen to this challenge; to highlight their models, and to reward their achievements.

The Competition

TeachAManToFish, in partnership with Educating Africa is proud to announce the EDUCATING AFRICA Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education 2009.

The competition is open to all organizations based in Africa working in education, from primary through to tertiary, as well as in non-formal and adult education.

As well as a first prize of $10,000 and two runners-up prizes of $5,000, there are up to 50 awards of $1,000 available for the best entry from every country on the continent.

The top three award-winners will be sponsored a trip to South Africa for the awards presentation and peer learning visits to key Educating Africa and TeachAManToFish partners.

Entrepreneurship in Education

We’re looking for the very best programs and models for education.

  1. They’re entrepreneurial: developing innovative, replicable & scalable approaches to tackling entrenched problems in education; empowering future generations of entrepreneurs
  2. They’re sustainable: financially, socially and environmentally; looking beyond donations and subsidies as the primary means of creating positive social and environmental outcomes
  3. They create impact: achieving measurable results in terms of educational achievement and economic outcomes for participants and their communities

Organizations running such programs can be found across Africa; driven by social entrepreneurs who understand the role education can play within their communities in creating positive social change. All too often, however, these programs never receive the true recognition they deserve.

The EDUCATING AFRICA Pan-African Awards for Entrepreneurship in Education represent a small step forward in terms of drawing international attention to their achievements.

Entry Details

Entrants will be required to briefly describe the background to their program and its success in rising to the challenges of education in Africa.

All entries will be assessed against three criteria of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and impact.

Tips for entering
1.Tell us as much as you can within the word limits (250 words per section) - writing one line in each section won't win any prizes!
2. Tell us why what you do is different & important - why is your education work better than all the organizations around you? What solutions have you found to problems others struggle with? What is the real need you're meeting?
3. Justify your statements - if you're telling us you get great results make sure you explain what that means (e.g. reduced drop out rates, increased income of graduates etc.).
4. Use numbers where possible - it's not about including the biggest numbers, but we want to understand how many people you're helping with the resources you have.
5. Re-read your entry through before submitting it - for many people English isn't their first language, but if we can't understand what you've written you might not get the recognition you deserve

There are three ways to submit a competition entry:
