Jorge's
Story: Forbes Interview for Remarkable Student
If
you've seen the Teach
A Man To Fish video (and you should!), you'll have
seen one of our partner's students Jorge
Guerrero, just one of a family of 19 children,
talking about what he's learning at school.
Several years on now, and the remarkable
way in which Jorge has taken advantage of that education to
transform his life is incredible - in fact it's so impressive
that leading business magazine Forbes
thought it merited a one-on-one interview.
Stories like this are why we set up Teach
A Man To Fish - to give the millions of Jorge's
out there a chance to unleash their potential. We think you'll
agree it makes a great read, click

It's
a Jungle Out There: Creating Sustainable Businesses In The
Amazon
One
of the great tragedies of the 20th Century has been the widespread
destructive exploitation of the world's rainforests. Yet the
people who really profited from this were rarely the local
people.
To allow the next generation to move out
of poverty while making sustainable use of the resources the
forests provide is a challenge for the 21st Century, and one
that the Yachana
Foundation has made great strides on.
At their technical high school they provide
young people from four Amazon provinces with the skills to
be entrepreneurs and leaders in their communities. They
believe that involving students in practical methods of managing
micro-enterprises is one of the best ways to ensure the long
term survival of the rainforest.
The school is working toward the goal of
being largely self-sufficient through its own microenterprises,
and already covers around 20% of its
costs in this way.
A great example of how this works is their low-cost
water filtration system enterprise which benefits
students, the school and the community all at the same time.
By managing the process of producing and selling these water
systems students learn valuable skills in management, teamwork,
finance and sales.
The proceeds provide the high school income to cover its
costs, and the local community gets an affordable way to produce
clean water, leading to improved health.
When you add a few of these win-win-win solutions together
in the same spot you quickly find that two plus two equals
a lot more than four - now that's something they never taught
you at school!
This December Yachana will host Education That Pays For Itself
2009, the annual international Teach A Man To Fish conference,

Education
That Pays For Itself 2009: Make Us A Proposal We Can't Refuse!
Deadline for proposals
to present at Education That Pays For Itself 2009 now extended
till 22nd October.
Everybody talks about the importance of education for fighting
poverty, but very few have concrete ideas on how to pay for
it, and how to make it meet the needs of the poorest.
If you've got
something to say about sustainable education, this is the
event to say it at!
With the deadline
for proposals now extended to 22nd October there's
an extra couple of weeks to send us a short summary of the
experiences you'd like to share.
