Paying It Forward: Ugandan Piglet Project Bringing The Benefits Of Learning Home
St Denis Secondary School in Makondo, Uganda is a shining example of how an entrepreneurial school can not only benefit its students but their families and carers too.
The harsh reality is that around 25% of the children in this community have lost one or both parents. As a result of this loss, the children are left in the care of other adults in the community or alone to find their own way in life.
Supported by their U.S. partner NGO Into Your Hands, the school has started a 'Send a Piglet Home' program targeted at orphans and the most vulnerable children.
As part of the program students are given a female piglet, learn pig-rearing skills, construct a piglet shelter at their home, and receive ongoing technical support to ensure their success.
When the piglet reaches maturity, it is able to produce a litter with 8-10 babies. These offspring can be sold at the local market providing the family valuable income for basic needs and to support their child's education.
From each litter of piglets born, one piglet is donated back to the Send A Piglet Home program. This donation generates a sustainable supply piglets to sustain and the grow program into the future.
Teach A Man To Fish is now committed to assisting St Denis to extend its programs and increase its sustainability over the coming years - expect to hear more on this soon!
Schools for Entrepreneurs, India - Grant Competition 2009
 With such a huge number of organizations out there working in education it's a constant challenge for Teach A Man To Fish to make sure it supports the very best school-based income-generating initiatives - projects which are both educational and financially sustainable.
Our Schools for Rural Entrepreneurs, India grant competition is one more way in which we're trying to stimulate local social entrepreneurs to push their work further - unleashing students' and teachers' natural entrepreneurship and creativity to support more and better education across India.
From student-run stationery businesses funding classroom improvements, to schoolyard chicken-runs laying aside profits to pay for books, the competition aims to encourage education initiatives to come up with ways to boost financial resources at the same time as teaching practical and business skills to their students.
Grants of up to $5,000 are available for the best entries, but the closing date for Round 1 one-page concept notes is 1st April 2009 so spread the word fast!

Fight For Peace: From Sports to Education in Rio's Favelas, Brazil
 Fight for Peace works to overcome division and violence and promote the potential of young people through boxing, martial arts, education programmes and youth support services.
In Rio's favela (shantytown) communities, high levels of poverty, exclusion and a lack of social services have led to children and adolescents being employed by drug factions as openly armed foot-soldiers, lookouts and drug sellers.
Over the last nine year Fight for Peace has begun a transformation in the prospects of local youth through building their self-esteem, discipline, skills and knowledge within its programs.
Now in partnership with Teach A Man To Fish they're looking to increase their impact, and enhance their sustainability by introducing a fast-track education program offering formal qualifications and improved employment opportunities for marginalized youth.
Creating such a program and making it financially sustainable doesn't come without a struggle - but sometimes you learn as much in the fight as from the victory!

 President holds cabinet retreat at Teach A Man To Fish school:
When the Fundación Paraguaya set up a hotel at the Escuela San Francisco - the very first Teach A Man To Fish school - little did they expect that it would one day provide the venue for the President of Paraguay to hold his inaugural cabinet retreat!
When not revisiting key national strategies, members of the new government of Paraguay took time to meet students and listen to their hopes and aspirations. We'd always hoped that one day we'd catch the imagination of central government, but we certainly weren't expecting them to come and stay!
Tell the G20 to "Put People First" on March 28:
On 28th March thousands will march through London as part of a global campaign to challenge the G20, ahead of their 2nd April summit on the global financial crisis.
 Even before the banking collapse, the world suffered poverty, inequality and the threat of climate chaos. The world has followed a financial model that has created an economy fuelled by ever-increasing debt, both financial and environmental.
Our future depends on creating an economy based on fair distribution of wealth, decent jobs for all and a low carbon future. There can be no going back to business as usual. Teach a Man to Fish Founder Honoured as Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum
 It's not every day that you find yourself in the esteemed company of Tiger Woods, Chris Martin from Coldplay, CEO's of Facebook and YouTube, not to mention over 200 outstanding business leaders, social entrepreneurs and public figures from around the world.
It is therefore with great pride, and a large dose of humility that Nik Kafka founding director of Teach A Man To Fish joins the list of Young Global Leaders (YGL) 2009 - an honour, bestowed each year by the World Economic Forum.
Drawn from a pool of almost 5,000 candidates, the Young Global Leaders 2009 were chosen by a selection committee, chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, comprising 31 eminent international media leaders.
More than a personal accolade, this is a wonderful opportunity to share the vision of Teach A Man To Fish with an astonishing array of decision-makers and thought-leaders who have the capacity to shape our common future. Here's to making education for all a reality - and of course to making it sustainable!
